O'Neil was a student in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. Her vocal performance impressed the judges, and so she was voted into the final 100th stage. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were stunned by this and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the lower three again. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner said that in the morning, the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
